The Yorktown Democratic Committee launched its’ internship
program in the Spring of 2008, working closely with the
Civic Internship Program at Yorktown High School under the
direction of Mr. Steve Rome.
Selected interns receive High School Credit for their work
and are required to perform three (3) hours of Committee
work each week, under the direction and supervision of the
Chair of the YDC, or her designee.
YDC Interns attend weekly Town Board meetings; monthly
Committee meetings; interface with local, county and Federal
elected officials, including our Supervisor, Town Clerk,
Town Justices, and our Congressman; and, in short, learn the
inner workings of government.
A YDC intern will also learn first hand what it takes to
become an elected official and will participate in grass
roots political activities such as fundraising and voter
canvassing.
Our YDC interns will, in short, gain insight and knowledge
regarding not just the end product of politics—becoming an
elected official, but also what it takes to bring a
candidate to office.
The YDC program is tailored to teaching our youth about
local government and encouraging those interested to learn
how they too can make a difference.
YDC interns are eligible to apply for the Committee’s annual
scholarship award, which is currently set @ $500.00 per
recipient for selected Yorktown and Lakeland High School
Students. One Senior from each school will receive an award.
Although participation in the YDC Internship program is not
required to be considered for a YDC scholarship, it will be
among the factors considered.
Internships are available to any registered Democrat
residing in the Town of Yorktown and are not limited to our
High School students. Interested adults are also welcome.
